Got a call from a client this morning about their lack of internet. We had a pretty big storm over the weekend and their SBG6580 got fried. When I logged into their account to send a hit during troubleshooting I saw this.
How frequent is this? I've never seen it before.

NVG448BQ - IP Passthrough and Double NAT issues
Hi All,
My trusted NVG589, which I had beautifully set up in IP Passthrough mode, and allowed all of my remote/external access openings was swapped out yesterday for a new NVG448BQ.
My setup is basically as follows:
Frontier / Vantage Internet gateway, formerly NVG589, now NVG448BQ, in bridge mode. Wireless Disabled. Packet Filtering = Disabled, Firewall = Off. My DHCP range on the device is small, 192.168.10.1 to 192.168.10.10. Gateway address is set to 192.168.10.254 / 255.255.255.0.
- into -
Apple TimeCapsule / Airport doing all of the DHCP, Port Forwarding etc. This is setup as 192.168.1.1 / 255.255.255.0, Router Mode = DHCP and NAT, with a couple other bridged airport devices set up as 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3. The DHCP range is 192.168.1.190 - 192.168.1.250
I was able to easily set up the IP Passthrough again, under the Firewall --> DMZ screen. DMZ = enable, Type = Share IP Address with WAN, Passthrough Mode = DHCPS-Fixed, PassThrough Fixed MAC address = manually set MAC address of Apple time capsule.
The issue is now I'm getting Double NAT warnings on my Airport device, and all of my port forwarding is not working, unless I also add port forwarding entries on the NVG448BQ to first forward those ports to the Airport device.
Settings on my Airport devices have not been changed at all, everything was working as expected up through when the residential gateway was switched yesterday. I knew the NVG589 pretty well, and thought it would be a breeze to get back up and running with the new NVG448BQ, and for the most part it was, except for these double NAT issues.
Any help or advice would be appreciated. I can share screen shots if that would help.
Thanks,
Jim

Arris SB8200 question
I've ordered myself a SB8200 and really have no clue on what how things work other than I have issues with my current modem and I found out I have a puma 6 chipset. I have Cox if that matters but my question is I need a wireless setup in my household and plan on using a Netgear R7000 router now since the SB8200 has 2 ports on the back can I run one directly to a PC and the other to the router? Also will there compatibility issues between the two? Thanks for any input

white box retail SB6141: is Hardware Version: 8.0 = most recent?
i noticed a 3yo sb6141 is HWV 7.0, while a 1yo sb6141 is HWV 8.0
is 8.0 the latest sb6141 version? or is there now another 8.x or 9.x ?
i was able to fix an intermittent problem replacing a working 7.0 with an 8.0
(reduced t3 errors where bound channels dropped were not being replaced)
is that simply coincidental, or is there a known 7.0 not compatibility issue out,
that people buying the secondary modem market should avoid HWV 7.0 models.

Arris DG2470A Technician Login
Hello,
I'm an RCN client and am using their DG2470A router/modem.
I need to enable a feature that I know the router supports (VLANs, or LAN segmentation as Arris calls it), but it requires the technician login.
Calling RCN support was pretty useless - I called twice, one time they told me they don't know what the technician login is and once where they never even heard of VLANs.
Does anybody know how to access the web GUI using the technician login?
Thanks,

A bug with most "Surfboard" modems?
I have a http://www.netduma.com router which has a very crazy market... Gamers. However it uses QOS to give gamers a better connection in busy households and it works well for that. Recently I purchased a SB6141 to replace my old and failing TM822G. After months and months of trying to figure out why sometimes devices in my house followed the QOS rules I set and sometimes they didn't, I narrowed it down to the SB6141. Today I switched back to the TM822G and all my problems went away. Is this a bug with most "Surfboard" modems?
It seems to do the same when I use my Asus RT-N56U and try to use QOS. Sometimes it works, and other times it doesn't. For example, I could upload to YouTube on my wired PC with Chrome and my ping stays low as expected, but if I upload with Firefox my ping spikes and causes lag while gaming. If I do the same test with both routers on the TM822G I can upload and download without any major spikes in my ping while gaming. Which is exactly what is supposed to happen.

Arris SB8200 Comcast issues with "Dynamic Range Window violation"
I bought an Arris 8200 to resolve the dreaded Puma6 issues I was clearly having, and so far I have to say those latency issues are not happening (I've only had the modem for a day now though so far).
But I do have a few concerns, is anyone else having these problems?
- I am receiving these warnings in the event log, and they are occuring every _minute_
Warning(5) "Dynamic Range Window violation"
- When accessing the status page at http://192.168.100.1/cmeventlog.html, it takes at least 30 seconds to load. Wondering if said logging above every minute might be exhausting memory.
- I believe the event log is due to the channel 159 being out of range of the other channels, what is this channel used for? I couldn't find anything on the web.
Thanks

High Uncorrectable Counts / 60% Packet Loss
I was working from home today and randomly, connections started breaking (ssh, music playing, etc). Pinging 8.8.8.8 got me a roughly 60% packet loss over a 5 minute period. I have an Arris SB6190 so I went and plugged into it directly and got the same results. I happened to have a Cisco modem from Comcast kicking around, so I plugged it in and had the same results.
A tech came out and found that there wasn't a MOCA filter anywhere, so he installed one, but that doesn't excuse my Arris freaking out. By the time the tech arrived, I was able to ping more consistently and so far my connections have been stable, but I see some very high uncorrectable counts. The screenshot was taken about an hour after the modem was last rebooted
Anyone have any thoughts as to why this a) may have suddenly happened and b) what I might be able to do / suggest upstream from me to remediate?

Does SB6183 and SB6190 allow you to specify DNS?
I am interested in purchasing either an SB6183 or sb6190. But I want the ability to specify the DNS servers.
I have looked at the spec and user guides for these modems, but nowhere does it say anything or show the screens that would allow me to specify the DNS servers.
I will be using the modem with Spectrum.
I currently have a cable company supplied TX8717T. Don't like it and it does not allow me to specify the DNS servers.
Anyone know the answer???
Thanks in advance.

Arris announces DOCSIS 3.1 modems
DOCSIS 3.1 models announced today, expected availability sometime in 2016.
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/arris-unveils-next-generation-docsis-31-modems-300157703.html
Touchstone CM8200 - This ultra-fast DOCSIS 3.1 modem delivers unprecedented data rates of more than 5 Gbps downstream and 2 Gbps upstream. Switchable filters with full 204MHz upstream and 1218MHz downstream support reliable gigabit performance, while reducing interference in the home network.
SURFboard® SB8200 Cable Modem - This modem offers the same DOCSIS 3.1 performance and features as the CM8200, but is intended for retail customers, who can take advantage of its 32x8 QAM channel bonding capabilities on DOCSIS 3.0 cable systems.http://www.multichannel.com/news/cable-tv-conventions/arris-launches-docsis-31-modems/394450
Arris declined to comment on which silicon provider is powering its new line of D3.1 CPE gear. Broadcom, Intel and STMicroelectronics are among those that are developing D3.1 modem chipsets.
...
In a recent interview, Arris director of product management Steve Krapp said the E6000 is software-upgradable to D3.1 in the downstream direction, adding that the vendor plans to introduce a new line card in 2016 that will support a D3.1-based upstream.Edit: now on the front page as well https://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Arris-Releases-its-First-DOCSIS-31-Modem-135352

TG862g - want opendns - interface completely changed after Xfinity install
Hi,
I'm installing internet & phone at my church and we bought a Arris TG862g modem/router. I wanted to use OpenDNS for some basic filtering. When I got the modem I checked out the settings and found I would be able to easily configure a custom DNS server (though I wasn't able to see how I could block other DNS queries as I do at home).
However, I went to configure the OpenDNS servers after the Xfinity installation was completed and I found a completely different web interface. It moved, first of all from 192.168.0.1 to 10.0.0.1. There's a new "Xfinity" logo on the router configuration pages. And the option to configure DNS at all is completely gone.
Does anyone know if it's possible to get the factory interface back? Or otherwise configure the router to use only OpenDNS? Or do I need to buy a separate router now (not that that's a terrible idea anyhow...)?
Thanks in advance,
Eric

Places to buy modems online?
About 3 years ago I was looking around online, thinking about upgrading my modem and I remember coming across a website that was selling a 16x4 Arris when the 24x4 modems were just coming out, for about $80 when the major online retails had them for $120+. And that wasn't for volume purchases or B2B sales either. That made me realize that there are places that might be better than Amazon/Newegg/etc for buying equipment, and so I was hoping some of you guys might be wise as to what those places are. If anyone can point me to some places, that would be great!

Speed consistency issues since upgrading to SB8200
Recently, as reported on this very site, Grande Communications has launched a new 1000/50mbps, DOCSIS 3.1 based service. My old SB6183 is not DOCSIS 3.1 compatible, so I purchased a SB8200 on Amazon (thanks same-day delivery!) and called to complete the upgrade. On my old plan (400/20) my speeds were very consistent, and even over WiFi I was typically receiving 200-420mbps speeds depending on the time of day (using a Netgear Orbi with 1 satellite). Since the change in equipment and upgrade of my plan, I've noticed my speeds are extremely inconsistent. Download speeds will range from 15(!)-820mbps, although upload is generally reliable at 45-52mbps even on WiFi. I've tested the connection even directly connected to the modem, and have noticed no improvement over being hardwired to the main Orbi unit (WiFi download speeds have taken a dive, though, rarely exceeding 100mbps, but that may be unrelated to the modem as it does not provide WiFi, the Orbi does).
Doing some research on the new modem, I found that Arris recommends power levels of -15 to 15 dBmV for downstream connections when utilizing QAM256 modulation, and 45 to 51 dBmV for upstream connections when using 3+ channels (as shown here: http://arris.force.com/consumers/articles/General_FAQs/SB8200-Troubleshooting-Internet-Connectivity/?l=en_US&fs=RelatedArticle). Looking at the stat page for my SB8200, it looks like my line states are failing on both fronts, with downstream power generally at 16+, and upstream at 36 (but again, my upstream "seems" generally ok).
When Grande first installed my service they did add a splitter near the modem (coax leads from the wall connection to the splitter, which then has 3 outputs of which only 1 is used to then send additional coax to the modem). The tech said the signal was too strong, which makes sense when looking at my downstream signal strength, but not when looking at the upstream strength.
My question is, considering my service was perfect on the SB6183 and on the 400/20 tier using the same physical connection, is there any real chance the issue is with the modem itself, or at least being exacerbated by the modem? Does the problem as stated here, and taking into account the screenshots of my modem stat page, sound like something that would have occurred simply due to upgrading my service, and which ISP should be able to solve? I know that Linksys has their own retail available DOCSIS 3.1 modem but I don't want to jump the gun with a lot of equipment changes, not the least because I have AT&T Digital Life and any time I swap hardware it requires a tech support call to reestablish a connection to my WiFi.
It may be I do not understand all of the changes that occur when moving from a DOCSIS 3.0 to 3.1 service, and that Grande will have to make adjustments on their end, it just seems odd that I suddenly having trouble using a physical connection and a provider that have both been superb up until now, with the only physical change being the modem itself. I appreciate any insight you can provide!
